Hr1 - Ukko-Pekka

Hr1 was a fast expresstrain locomotive. 21 machines were built between 1937-1957 with numbers 1001-1021. The last two were fitted with roll bearings. The last number 1021 is in museum traffic today.

The model is built from Kaj Wikberg's brass- and resin kit.

Building starts with the frame.

Front boggie.

Rear boggie in place.

Fitting of wheels.

Cylinders added.

I chose to use Alan Gibsonin's pick up's.

The frame is blackened with A-West Blacken-It

Camshaft.

The original solution for transmission is motor in the tender and traction in the engine and a drive shaft between these two. I decided however to replace the big Mashima motor and put a small Faulhaber in the engine. The pictures above are from another model.

I ordered from Wizard Models an Exactoscale 4GB 126A gearbox (40:1) and from Sb-Modellbau a Faulhaber 1224 N 012 SR motor. This motor has extra strong magnets.

The original worm gear and drive shaft is removed and replaced with a new one.

The motor fits under the cabin and is unvisible.

It's very important to ensure a smooth operation before continueing the building.

Tender boggies.

Tender underframe and walls.

Folded underframe.

At the edges is 0,5mm brass wire soldered.

The bottom has holes for the sound decoder's speaker.

Primary paint and resin parts.

The underframe and boggies are blackened with A-West's Blacken-It.

The current pick-ups are soldered to a small printed circuit board.

The boggies are fixed with screws going through brass tubes.

The lanterns have small 1,2mm diameter Miniatronics' bulbs.

The wires of lower lamps go under the buffer.

To have more weight, lead are put to the tender.

Schematic of the decoder. The Miniatronics lamps are 1,5V and 30mA and they need resistors according to the picture.

Testing the bridge.

The urethan resin boiler is replaced with a turned brass boiler to gain weight. There is also the place for Seuthe nr. 27 smoke generator.

Assemly of the cabin.

The boiler is painted with Model Master's Gun Metal, dome with Steam Engine Green from Finnish Railway Museum's paint set and the nose part with Humbrol's Satin Black.

The bridge is now black.

The cabin is first painted with Humbrol grey spray primer, then with Steam Engine Green from Finnish Railway Museum's paint set. Sides are made with the decals below.
