Märklin Sr1

Sr1 is the first series of electric
locomotives of the Finnish Railways company. The locomotives were
built by the company "Energomachexport" from former
Sovjet Union. The first pre-series of six locos were delivered
by January 1974. The rest of the first series of 21 locos were
delivered by the end of the year 1975. Totally 110 locos were
made by the year 1985. One additional loco, number 3111, were
built of spare parts in Finland in 1993. The first prototype,
number 3000, stayed at the factory until 1994, which after it
was delivered to Finland and updated to number 3112. In the middle
part of the loco is the main tranformer of 4680kVA, which feeds
the four DC-motors of totally 3100kW. Most of the electric parts
are manufactured by Strömberg in Finland.

The starting point of this building
project is the Märklin loco Re 482 (BR 185), product numbers
36850..36855. The best models are those with double pantographs,
because they are all needed to build the finnish version.

The body can be made of 1mm aluminium
sheet.

You can download drawings in here.

The more modern way making the
body is to use a rapid-prototype machine to print the 3D-cad file.

The surface of the model is not
totally smooth, but few layer of paint will fix it. The body is
interchangeable with the original one.

The headlights are first painted
with black to prevent the light coming through the walls.

The walls are painted with light
grey and the roof with mid grey.

The skirt and window frames are
dark grey.

The red markings are done with
self-made water decals.

You can download a hi-res picture
for printing the decals by clicking the picture. The pictures
can be printed on Bare-Metal's
decal sheets. The red picture is printed to clear sheet and the
other to white sheet.

The details of the roof are done
balsa-wood and cardboard.

The strips on roof are Evergreen
0,25mmx0,5mm styrene strips.

Brass tubes are used for holding
the lamps.

Lamps are Miniatronics' diameter 2,4mm 16 volt lamps.
They are glued in place with white glue.

The Märklin loco has originally
leds as lights and there are 562ohm resistors for the leds on
the decoder board. To use three 16V lamps the resistors have to
changed to 82ohm 1W resistor

Because SMD-resistors are hard
to find in stores, it is easier to solder a short cut to the resistors
and use a separate resistor.

The original flex board is cut
down and the wires and the resistor is fixed by soldering.

Finally the solder is covered with
tape.

This can be used as connector to
the decoder.

The two arm pantograph of Sr1 can
be built of two one arm pantograph of Re 482.

I have used a slider part of Ae
6/6, which happened to be available for me. Normally the slider
has to be built separately.

The handrails are made of 0.5mm
wire.

For the parts on the roof I have
used some leftovers from my other projects.

Sr1 ready for service.
